In my personal experience (supplemented in no small part by exhaustive and thorough research involving reading a five page pamphlet on the subject - five whole minutes of my precious life which I shall never, ever get back, a fragment of my life lost to the void of pointlessness!!), trolls are perfectly damn capable of chewing off somebody's face with no additional aid.

In fact, one might hazard to say that trolls were already accomplished face-chewers when we as a species were still trying to figure out this whole business of standing on two legs.
