Can someone please help me? There is a ghost at the corridor and I do not know how to get away.

[Obviously, no one has explained to Ib that the ghosts in Hogwarts aren't like the vengeful ones from Japanese folk tales.]

[Later in the day...this is filtered to Shinra]

Kishitani-senpai, here's the picture.

[Enclosed is a very nice crayon drawing of the Hogwarts lake. There's the sun in the sky, the castle in the background and a whole bunch of students, some swimming, ~~some flailing in the water~~, some sun-bathing, and some sitting down and just chatting with friends or reading books. While Ib did not draw any student in particular, there are two figures she made sure to get right. Underneath the tree, Shinra should find a recognizable depiction of him and Ib sitting together.]

I hope it is to your liking.

[Whoops, someone is accidentally the ghost who's inadvertently scaring her.

It takes him a minute to notice her, but when he does he floats closer slowly. He's mistaking her hesitation and fear for general first year nerves, so he offers her a polite smile and floats down at her level.]

Are you lost? Do you need help finding a classroom?

[Ib's actually hiding underneath a table, with her head buried in her journal and her hand clutching her quill for dear life, when the ghost appears and speaks to her.

Naturally, the right thing to do when you meet a ghost for the first time is to scream out loud and throw your journal at him.

Oops.

[There's a long moment where Kankri looks through himself to the journal, and then he looks back to the little first-year with a look of confusion. He floats back a few feet and focuses hard enough to gently nudge the journal back across the floor to her. He hesitates before he speaks, and maintains a respectful distance.]

You dropped this.

Does my presence frighten you? I assure you, that's not at all my intention, and I apologize if my appearance may have dredged up unpleasant memories or experiences without my knowledge. If you would prefer for me to leave you alone, I absolutely shall do so from now on, but if you require assistance or directions, then I am happy to provide my services for you.

[The ghost's reaction surprises her, but does little to calm her fears until the journal slides back to her and he speaks. She's still in a state of shock though, so a lot of what is being said to her just flies over her head. The only thing she does though, which she feels is at least the polite thing to do, is whisper back to him as she picks up her journal and hugs it to her chest.]

Thank you. I...am sorry I threw it at you.

Please do not drag me to hell.

[He's about to respond, when she murmurs that last remark. He couldn't have heard that right. Could he?]

Drag you to...hell?

[What a preposterous idea.]

Why on earth would I do something like that?

B-because I am a human.

[It's really that simple to her.]

...

[He opens his mouth. Closes it. Rubs his chin for a moment thoughtfully. Then smiles.]

I was too, not so long ago.

[Alright, this is strange. The ghost had not touched her yet, had returned her journal, apologized and is smiling at her. She relaxes slightly, but she's still ready to bolt the first instance she sees any signs of danger.]

So, you will not hurt me?

[Good, this is some sort of progress. He makes sure to maintain a respectful distance so as not to frighten her.]

Of course not. Truth be told, even if I were to try and touch you, I would pass right through.

[He sinks down into the floor a little ways to demonstrate his intangibility, and then bobs back up a little like a cork.]

But I assure you that the last thing I could want to do is hurt you. Or anyone else, for that matter.

[She is startled when he phases through the floor; she has seen the ghosts in Hogwarts do the same from as far as possible, but to see one just sink through the floor right in front of her is a little disconcerting and frightening.

Still, he was talking to her. Not moaning, not clawing, not grabbing her ankles or her hair and pulling her down with him. And he said he did not want to hurt her, and he seemed nice. Maybe...maybe he was a nice ghost instead?]

Oh, thank you. I am...I am glad. You are not a yurei?

[He blinks a little.]

A...yurei? I'm not sure what that is. I'm afraid you'll have to explain. Is it some kind of malevolent creature?

[He's situated himself cross-legged, a couple of inches off of the floor.]

Whatever it is, I'm fairly certain I'm not one. My name is Kankri. May I ask yours?

A yurei is a vengeful spirit who dies angry and full of hatred. They want to kill people, even innocent people, because they cannot rest in peace.

[She shifts till she is sitting in the seiza position, her legs folded underneath her.]

My name is Ib Amano.

Bloody hell, just walk past it. It's not going to hurt you.

But ghosts eat people.

... You have to be pulling my leg.

Do you really think they'd let ghosts that eat people into a school full of kids? It's not going to eat you. It might not even talk to you.

[Like everyone else, she doesn't get back to Arthur's journal entry until later when the crisis is resolved.]

He explained things to me. I apologize for making such a silly mistake. I thought he was a vengeful spirit.

[He's almost forgotten about it when he sees the message, but the girl's panic from earlier drags itself up from the back of his mind before he makes the mistake of asking her what the hell she's talking about]

Ah. Good, then.
The only one you need to keep an eye out for is Peeves.

He is the ~~pultre~~ poltergest in the castle? I will keep away from him, thank you,

Are you trying to get away from the ghost? I would say just walking should do the trick.

What if it chases me?

Then tell it to go away! The ghosts here are rather friendly.

[There isn't a reply from Ib until much later, as Kankri's swooped down on her by this time. However, she does get back to Loki in the end, when everything is resolved.]

I apologize; it was a misunderstanding. I thought he was a vengeful ghost who would drag me to hell if he saw me.

I see. None of the ghost here are very vengeful; in fact, most are quite friendly!

Yes. He was very nice and he accepted my apology. I was being very silly to be scared, but I have never spoken to a ghost before.

Oh dear!
The ghosts arent usually malicious in these parts miss!
But if you need assistance just tell me where you are.

I am in a classro

[And that's when Kankri swoops down on her. Her ink veers sharply to the side, and there's no more answer for now.

Later on though, after the misunderstanding is settled, Ib writes a reply back.]

I apologize for my late reply. Everything is OK now. Thank you for trying to help me today.

A classro? Not sure im aware of what those are.
Unless you were intending to say classroom and stopped for some reason.
Though i cant figure a reason youd stop midword like that unless something forced you t--
...Oh dear.

[He frets a bit, but not overmuch, since he doesn't know her name or what she looks like so there isn't a whole lot he can do short of running around the castle saying someone's been attacked by a ghost. Regardless, her reply comes as a welcome one and he leaps back to the journal with his green ink.]

I believe thats a rather common misconception.
Ghosts do tend to be the subject of many a negative story after all.
If im not mistaken the ghosts within the castle are all pretty friendly.
Some of them might be a bit of a nuisance but i dont think theyd actually do you any harm.

The ghost I have heard of eat humans and take their spirit away, so I am glad that Kankri (that is his name) is not like that.

[She doesn't notice Peter's reply, as by the time the message appears she's chucked the book straight at the ghost in an attempt to knock it away.

Still, much later when things have settled, she notices the messages and starts replying to each of them.]

Depending on which ghost you've encountered, you could ask it to move aside so you can pass. But most of the ghosts here are relatively accommodating, so it shouldn't be too much trouble.

I wouldn't worry about that. I've been living in the United Kingdom for the past eleven years and I don't think I've seen any yurei here. For that matter, I don't think I've seen a yurei at all.
