Big dogs are startling when they bark, but overall they're quieter... and I'd much rather have that then the constant yapping and pestering of a little one.

If birds are an option, I would absolutely vote for them. Not as affectionate as dogs, but more consistently affectionate than cats, if you're the right person. On the chance you aren't the person they've bonded with, they are still the most aesthetically pleasing to have around. And they sing.
