i believe the current hypothesis that has gained the most favor is
SOME SORT OF MIXING OF ALTERNATE REALITY SELVES, MR. HOLMES.
i must say, though,
THAT YOUR ALTERNATE SELF
seems exactly how I'd imagine an adult version of yourself.
