I hardly see what the point is of naming all these goats and putting up pictures of them. No one does it with the cows they get milk from or the chickens they get eggs from. They're there to produce potions ingredients, not to coddle. In fact, I'm guessing the feeding behaviors I've observed from some of the students are actually fairly deleterious to a goat's health, unless you want a really fat one.

Naming it is hardly a prerequisite for optimal care. I am fairly certain goats neither speak nor understand English, and can likely be summoned through the judicious use of food.

Banner's goat seems to be the result of some genetic abnormality.

It's the sound they hear, not the word. Technically the name is irrelevant. And anything can be summoned with food, just looking at the great hall at lunch or dinner proves that.

You have a very good point, but the goats are also very, very cute.

I don't see it. They're simply another animal, there isn't even anything unusual about them.

Precisely! They are an organic method to produce a needed product. Of course one should care for them well, that's only common sense, but feeding them scraps from the dinner table is a bit much, and cuddling with them. What's the point? No one will be keeping them after this year, anyway.

Mmm, exactly! Obviously you want to keep them in good health so they don't, you know, get sick or die, but... It's definitely silly to get attached.

I am not looking forward to the copious tears we'll no doubt have to endure at the year's end.

I don't see why I should be. After all, the instinctive human response to 'cute' things is related to biological imperative, especially among women. The closer something resembles a human infant in proportion, the 'cuter' it is usually judged to be. The large eyes and head, smaller body, and larger extremities one sees in young mammals is a fine example of this.

I, however, never intend on having children, nor do I feel any particular attraction towards nor urge to protect creatures that resemble them.

I think it's safe to say the human race will be better off if you never breed. Your kids would be dead within a week.

It's simple biology. It's not your fault that you were born like that, but it does explain a great deal.

And I'm not sure. But it won't stop following me around, even when I'm done with feeding it, and it keeps trying to jump on me. I don't think that's normal goat behavior.
