006 Those Things Send Us Down A Road

[Someone sure was missing from classes and didn't eat all day. His handwriting is different than usual, awkwardly paced, as if pausing when finishing some of the words trying to decide what to say.]

Can I get the homework and an idea of what we did in class today?

[Ink blots and a couple of smudges.]

It's odd how often humans consider themselves the superior species and assume all organisms below them are shallow and un-feeling.

There have been multiple examples - how animals can feel depression or even happiness just as us.

[Sure isn't as light-hearted as usual.]

We are smarter and far more skilled than any animal out there. We can also use magic, whereas they can not.

So your contention is that we have a higher intelligence and we can use magic? Interesting, I haven't heard the latter before.

Out of curiosity sake, I'm sure you know this, but were you aware that scientists are looking into the possibility that all plants have sort of emotions of their own?

That's exactly what I'm saying. We can do things they can't, which means we are better by default.

Science has absolutely no relevance in this school and even less with the subject I teach, Mister Parker. Do not insult me.

Humans are at the top of the food-chain for a reason I guess.

Apology accepted. From now on, however, I expect you to keep mention of science to the absolute minimum. Which is to say none, as it isn't necessary and is useless in comparison to magic. It has no relevance to your studies at all and I expect you to focus on important things.

[Then Peter tried his hand at being diplomatic.]

Inquisitor, with all due respect, I can assume you're a man with strong moral values, family and the wellness of others are just two I'm sure we have in common. My family has valued magic and science for a long time, unrelated perhaps, but still something of value to them. It would be going against them to stop talking about it.

I will however, keep my magical studies my top priority as I hope I've shown in your class and other classes.

Do not get me wrong, I can certainly understand that. Having beliefs and ideals is important. But those types of beliefs have no place in this school, which is first and foremost magic. While you're here, you will be expected to do whatever it takes to put magic first. Or at least while I'm here, and that is going to be a very long time. You can continue believing in science but I do not want to hear about it, nor do I expect you to parade it around like you have been.

If you continue to do so, then I will be forced to give you detention. It isn't a matter of asking you to sacrifice your beliefs, it's a matter of asking you to listen to what I am telling you to do. It's a matter of respect.

May I inquire something out of simple curiosity, if it would be alright with you? What does your detention entail? A friend of mine said he had to help plow the garden with no magic?

Well that would depend upon the severity of the disrespect in which you are undoubtedly about to come forth with, wouldn't it?

Either way, then, it would still depend on the severity of one's actions. The land outside of the greenhouse has been plowed, so I would find something else for you to do.

Well this is unexpected. But pleasantly so. However, I do have to ask why it is you're doing this.
