The end of the term is nigh.

[Alec draws out the pause for a moment, before he continues.]

And whatever other overdramatic bullshit phrase people like to use in lieu of admitting that you're scared that you'll fail.

Perhaps if you spent more time studying and less time talking about it, you wouldn't be so far behind that it requires cramming.

[His voice is an arrogant drawl; he's poking at people because it amuses him to do so, nothing more, nothing less.]

Just a friendly bit of advice. Maybe you can use it when you have to repeat this year again.

It depends on the individual. Some would prefer to hear the necessary words from a close friend rather than a complete stranger, while others may need to take a fall before they'll actually listen. And some may decide to cling on stubbornly to bad habits, out of laziness or even out of pride.

Still, kind words sweeten a harsh message! There's no need to coddle them, of course, but a better approach would be to inform them politely of their mistakes and, if you are in the position to do so, offer your assistance. Again, you might face rejection but from my experience people are more receptive to encouragement then a straight off "I-told-you-so."

Are there any particular students that you are concerned about, Mr Campion? I might just be the Flying Professor, but I could pass a word to the other teachers if some students need extra help preparing for the exams.

Well if the state of some of your peer's education has earned them your attention that you would care to make your public service announcement, then you must have some stake in all of this. But I must say that you are not endearing yourself well to your fellow students.

Well to solve the problem, how about lending them a hand? That way you reduce the complaints and maybe even make new friends. It's worth a shot.

At the very least then you can lower the whining, as you call it. And it'd be like extra revision for you as well.

[You could also make some new friends, he wants to add again, but probably not a good idea to repeat the point.]

All the better then! First year covers the basics of wizardry and everyone could stand to benefit from brushing off the dust from our older textbooks every now and then.
