Fourth current

[There are a lot of scribbled-out words. Those of you who can read Portuguese (Eridan) or Greek (Cyrus, Eridan) might be able to make out little words and phrases in the pink scribbles - "Help me", "I don't know what to do", "I can't" - but most of the scribbles are too scratched out to be legible.]

[Her handwriting is shakier than normal, and she's dropped her little quirk. All of her 'H's are written normally.]

Could someone please come get me? I need someplace to stay for the rest of the holidays.
I really hate to trouble anyone, I'm sure everyone's having a lot of fun with their families and friends, but I don't know what else to do.

Please.

I can't stay here anymore.

I don't know what to do, Professor! I just...I have to leave. I can't come back to this house again, but I don't...have anywhere to go.

[Karkat just about tumbles down the stairs as he pulls his ratted, worn hoodie on, flipping the hood back as he approaches his uncle, trying not to look like he had almost broken his neck.]

I'm coming with you.

Are you sure, Karkat? You've never apparated before.

She's my fucking girlfriend.

[Hope that's all the answer you need, uncle.]

[It certainly is.]

Hold my arm and hold it tight. I'll never forgive myself if you lose an ear doing this.

[Karkat looks like he wants to say something about that but he closes his mouth for once and takes hold of Sal's arm with what's pretty much a death grip. You probably shouldn't have told him that was possible.]

Let's go.

[Yeah, that was a bad idea in hindsight. But at least he'll be aware when he officially learns in sixth year.]

Alright, 1...2...3. [A split second later they're on Feferi's doorstep.]

[After letting go of his uncle and patting himself down to make sure he was in one piece, Karkat gave a small, relieved sigh before he opened the door, not even bothering to knock first.]

Fef??

[The house was huge. Huge, and completely silent. Karkat's voice echoed in the stillness, until finally running footsteps came nearer.]

[Then Feferi launched herself at Karkat, and clung to him like she needed him more than she needed air. She was sobbing into his hoodie, completely beyond words.]

[As much as he'd like to join in and hug his poor student, Sal stays a step or two back so the two of them can have their moment.]

[Karkat almost stumbled back at the force of Feferi that launched itself at him, given that he was a little bit shorter than her. He wrapped his arms around her, a little awkward since he didn't really know about how to comfort someone but this was how they did it in the movies, right? He stroked a hand through her hair with one hand, the other rubbing between her shoulders as he pressed a kiss to her cheek.

He didn't bother with the sentiments of 'it's gonna be okay' or 'everything's alright'. He just stood there, letting her soak his hoodie with her tears and holding onto her.]

[Feferi finally, shakily, pulled herself together and stepped back, looking between Karkat and his uncle with wide, tear-stained eyes. She smiled weakly, and then bent down to pick up the rucksack that she'd dropped when she hugged Karkat.]

Thanks for coming. I'm really sorry you had to come all this way just for me.

[She wiped at her eyes with the sleeve of her robe.]

It's no trouble at all, dear. [He steps around Karkat and gives her a brief, tight hug.] Are you all ready?

[Karkat took a small step away from her, wondering what he should do. Does he take her hand? Should he take her rucksack from her? It was only just starting to hit him over the head that even though he was a self proclaimed expert on love and romance he didn't even know how to handle this situation. After a moment he reached to take hold of her hand, looking at her.]

I am if you are.

[She smiles sadly and hugs Professor Vantas back. She only looks around for a second, and then pats down her robes to make sure she still has her wand, before she shrugs the rucksack onto her shoulder, looking up at Professor Vantas and nodding.]

I think so.

[She reaches out and takes Karkat's hand, holding it tightly in hers, as tightly as she'd hugged him at first. She's trying to be brave, but her bravery's running out.]

[Sal gives her a warm, comforting smile and offers her his arm.]

Feferi, I need you to hold onto my arm very tightly and don't let go until we arrive. You too, Karkat.

[He nods in response and looks at her, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze before reaching to take hold of his uncle's free arm.]

C'mon.

[Feferi nods and takes hold of Professor Vantas' other arm. She's side-along apparated before, but not often, but at least she knows what to expect.]

One...two...Three.

[A few seconds pass and they're back in a living room where everything is covered in a thick layer of cat hair.]

[Ugh. He was never going to get used to that but hopefully it wasn't going to happen again until sixth year. Karkat gave his nose a sniff before he sneezed, letting go of his uncle's arm to cover his mouth with a sleeve before looking at Feferi again.]

We're here.

_{[She had no idea before the yank of apparition behind her navel that it would make her suddenly remember how tired she was. Her eyes widened a little when they stopped in the well-loved living room.]

[She turned to Karkat when he sneezed, and smiled a little despite everything.]

[And then she hugged him again.]}

[Sal gingerly takes Feferi's rucksack and gives her head a gentle pat.]

I'll take your things to our spare room, Feferi. Sorry about all the cat hair. [Sal out.]

[Karkat blinks when he finds an arm full of Feferi again, looking over her head as his uncle left. He wrapped his arms around her to return the hug before pulling back a little, brushing some hair from her eyes.]

Do you want me to show you around?

[She relaxes into the hug, not crying this time, when Karkat's arms wrap around her and hug her back. She smiles, although it's nowhere near her usual cheeriness, when he brushes the hair from her eyes, leaning into his hand.]

I would like that.

[He smiles a little before reaching behind him to take both her hands, starting to lead her through the house. He had an inkling of what was going through her head but he didn't know how to breach the subject. They could talk about it after she was rested anyway, if she wanted.

The last stop was the cattery.]

And this is the cattery Aunt Di runs. Obviously it's not open since school's still on but usually there's heaps of the fuckers running around.

_{[When they reached the cattery and Karkat explained what it was, Feferi looked surprised and looked around like she was expecting millions of cats to just appear out of nowhere.]}

Where are they now? [She smiled at Karkat, and squeezed his hands, then leaned in and kissed his cheek briefly.] I'm really grateful that you and your uncle came and got me.
