So i know this book of monsters is meant to have a bit of an attitude problem.
But the blasted thing has stolen my shoe.
I believe i can get it to abandon it by dangling my second one but i can only be in one place at one time.
So im not quite sure how to go from dangling the bait to retrieving my other shoe without losing something more important than the first shoe.
Any suggestions?

[For anyone in the Gryffindor boys' dorm, Jake has spent the last hour or so standing on his bed and trying various methods of reclaiming his lost shoe from under it with the vicious book. Naturally, he's warned any of his bunkmates of the danger, but that doesn't mean he's had any better luck getting the thing to relinquish his shoe.]

Maybe you could toss something in the middle of the floor and when the book goes for it, stun the book.

I can't answer that for sure but I reallydon't see why you would..it's not a student or anything and technically it belongs to you.

Well i suppose if i get in trouble for trying to reclaim my shoe so that i may attend other lessons it is a cost i must pay.

Im under the impression it rather likes spine-pettings.
But the problem with that is that im not sure how to administer them given its current state of disgruntled boot-chewing.

Suppose i could probably handle a few bites.

I was taking them off and messing with my books and some got knocked over...
I suppose i woke it up from a nap and it didnt really appreciate it.

Its just a book and even if i gave it my shoe i still have to get it locked up again so it doesnt try to eat anyone else that comes in here.

Have you tried using any sort of magic to immobilize it? I'm sure there must be a spell that can help you with that.

I initially hesitated to do so simply because i wasnt sure if it was appropriate to use spells in the dormitories.
But at this point im figuring if i get scolded ill just have to explain the situation and hope for the best.

As long as you aren't causing any certain mischief, you'll be fine. It is acceptable to probably use it in this situation, given that your book may cause harm to others if you don't get it controlled. Your fellows nor the teachers will fault you if you were doing it for the greater good. That is, acquire your book and save your poor, abused shoe. Plus, ensuring the safety of your Housemates is always a good thing.
