Seven ♒

[This entry might seem a little uncharacteristically chipper coming from Murdoc of all people. Why? Because it's all pretty much fake. He's engaged to Sybille simply to prevent her from being deported and this entry has been made in the interest of seeming genuine.]

Good evening, Hogwarts. It is my great pleasure to announce that after nearly twenty years of being madly in love, both myself and the lovely Miss Matteris have gotten ourselves engaged to be married.

As of yet we haven't set a date for the wedding but we were simply too excited to hold off on announcing this to our dear friends. I'm certain you will all be invited.

[Around ten minutes later, she's gently knocking on Murdoc's office door, before pushing it open and peering inside]

Professor Donoghue?

[Murdoc is at his desk, looking beyond exhaustedly at his journal. He perks up a little as Dolores peers in, giving her a very tired smile.]

Come sit.

[She returns the smile and closes the door behind her, crossing to him and giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze before she takes a seat]

Dear, are you quite sure about all of this?

[He grunts softly as she squeezes, still totally unsure of how to take affection. He rubs his hands over his face as she sits and sighs loudly.]

No, I'm not sure of any of it. It's all I can do and I have to do it.

[Her voice softens. She's concerned for the both of them]

It's very noble of you, Murdoc.. and I'm sure you've considered the consequences should you be discovered.

I have. If it comes to that I'll take the fall, again. I'm quite well known about the ministry, it would be a big to do if an inquiry was made against me.

Oh, sweetheart...

[She places a hand on his arm and squeezes gently]

I'm so grateful to you. You have no idea how important Sybille is to me.

Not everybody seems to agree.

[his lip just barely quivers towards the end of that sentence, but he holds back that desperate want to cry.]

My son..Constance..Dirk. None of them want anythin' to do with me.

[Sympathy lights in her eyes and she shifts her chair closer, moving her hand up to his shoulder. She looks at him for a long moment, then wraps her arm around him and hugs him warmly]

If.. you would like me to, I can speak to them on your behalf..

[Dolores sits back, and her smile is a little sad, but no less warm for it]

But Murdoc, please believe me when I tell you that you are doing a very brave thing.

[Murdoc honestly has no idea how to react to affection. He doesn't lean into the hug, he just tenses.]

I doubt it would do me any good. The damage is done.

[he gives her a confused sort of stare]

I'm just doin' what I can. There's nothin' brave about it.

To do something like this, for the sake of someone else, despite the problems it will cause you and knowing that those close to you will react poorly to the decision that you make.. is that not bravery, my dear?

[She's had to deal with worse reactions to affection than that, and it doesn't faze her in the least]

Damage can be repaired. Things are difficult now, but they will change.

All I've really done is manage to do is hurt everyone around me with my haste to fix things. Nobody wants to let me justify it either. They think I'm marryin' her so she'll be forced to love me or somethin' miserable like that.

It's not brave, it's dumb. Incredibly fuckin' dumb.

I'm letting you.

[She sits back, and chuckles warmly]

What do you want me to tell you, Murdoc..? Shall I agree with you? I do. It was very stupid, but that doesn't make it any less noble. I'm afraid I'm going to have to be stubborn about that, my dear.

[He lets himself slump forward, resting his head on the desk for a long moment before piping up in a soft voice.]

Tell me everything is goin' to be okay.

[She's quiet for a moment, though not because she doesn't know what to say - oh, she can easily tell him what he wants to hear, but she knows he won't really believe her. A few seconds pass in silence, then she shifts to the edge of her chair, and puts one arm gently around his shoulders, brushing her fingers over his hair and speaking in a soft, warm voice]

It will take time.. but everything will be alright, sweetheart.

[He hums, confirming that what she said was what he needed to head. He stays silent for a long while, staying in his slumped over position for the entire time.

Finally, he sits up again, looking dazed and as if he should have been crying. However, there's no moisture on his face or any indication that he's actually shed tears.]

Alright then.

[While he's quiet, she doesn't say anything, just continues with that light stroking of her fingertips over his hair, using the time to get her own thoughts in order.

When he sits up, Dolores shifts back, watching him quietly. A small smile tilts her lips up]

Should you have need of someone to listen, you know where to find me.

[He gives her an exceedingly tired look. He's trying to smile, but it just looks like a lip twitch right now.]

'ppreciate it.

[It's alright, she appreciates the effort. There's a moment's pause, then she stands, and rests one hand on his shoulder. She doesn't speak, but the comfort's there, then she moves towards the door and pauses beside it, her hand resting on the handle]

When you're feeling more yourself, Professor Donoghue, I have something that I need to discuss with you.

[He watches her cross the room, pondering asking her to stay for now but resisting the urge. That, however, makes him curious.]

I'm more myself than I'll ever be, Miss Maryam. You may as well tell me now an' save the worry.

[For a moment, it seems she might leave anyway, then she sighs and her shoulders drop, and she looks back at him. Really, she doesn't want to add any more worry to his mind, but if she tries to play it off as nothing he'll no doubt mull over it anyway]

... Of course.

[So, she moves back to the chair and sits, though more stiffly than before, with her back straight and her hands clasped in her lap]

Since the High Inquisitor arrived here I've been.. battling over whether or not I should reveal a certain fact about myself to the staff. There's been no need to tell anyone, but.. for those people here that I trust and admire.. I would rather they hear it from me.

[She closes her eyes for a moment. It's amazing, this feeling.. she's so nervous she feels sick. How long had it been since she'd felt that way?]

Professor Donoghue-- Murdoc. I am fifty-six years old, and have been a vampire for twenty-five years.

[Murdoc watches her carefully as she returns to the desk, knowing there's something very strange about the way she's acting. It's true that he's got a lot on his plate right now, but he knows himself. He knows that he won't be able to settle until his curiousity has been satisfied.

He leans forward, folding his arms and resting them on the desk as she speaks. He doesn't respond at first he simply nods.

Then, when she breaks the news, he widens his eyes a little. Then he just nods again, looking as if someone just answered a riddle for him.]

I should be surprised, shouldn't I?

[Strange, indeed. Dolores is rarely ever reticent with her emotions, at least not so visibly, but it's difficult to say something like this, particularly to someone she hasn't known for very long.

She would always shrug off enquiries about her age, simply smiling and asking how old they thought she was, because even if witches and wizards did age more slowly she didn't think she could get away with being almost sixty and looking like she did.

Murdoc's reaction, or lack of it, twists a knot of nerves up in her stomach and for a moment she looks as if she might cry, then he speaks, and she lets out a breathless little laugh instead]

Surprise might be an appropriate reaction.

[He shrugs lightly, running a hand through his hair.]

Seems fairly obvious now that you mention it. I suppose feelin' overwhelmin'ly stupid is a less favourable reaction to one of surprise.

[SIGH. He's already getting rusty.] In any case, he has no grounds to fire you.
