Steadily, I'm falling under the idea that many people use the Doubling Charm to be cheap. Why would you duplicate your cup instead of just buying a second one? It's just going to decay over time. The origin of it is reasonable enough and I understand the practical and strategic uses, but from my studying, it seems most people misuse it. Maybe that's just "muggle" of me.

Also, after going over the duties and the time requirements, I'm thinking of becoming a prefect.

Classes and studying were more important, I'm surprised an egghead like you didn't figure that out.

Both uses can be seen as practical if it's within reason. It's a fast way to make multiple targets for dueling practice.

I'm a little confused as to why you can't comprehend why someone would rather create a simple item for free instead of spending money on it. That's not misuse at all. If you made your own cup without magic, baking the clay in a kiln and all, would that be misuse? Or 'cheap', since you're not paying for someone else to do it?

Taking the time and hard work to make a cup by hand isn't the same as waving your wand and muttering a word.

No, you're right, magic makes things much more efficient. Much as machines do, or, say, the assembly line system. But I suppose those are misuse as well. And before you say those also require 'hard work', I'll point out that not everyone can do that particular spell, nor is it something one learns in first year. A very significant amount of work is required to get to it.

If it makes you feel any better, few people actually succeed in making exact duplicates - most of the time something will be off, like the colour or the handle will be wonky, etc.

Take it from me, prefect duty can be a headache. Especially if you're friends with Tony.

If you're only using it in the short term, there's nothing wrong with a magical duplicate.
Most wizards use magic to wash their dishes.
It's not like using a doubling charm to make yourself dishes is any worse than that.

My perspective is probably skewed by how my mother never used her magic for things she could just do without it, like dishes or getting something from across the room.
I didn't even know people did that 'til showing up here.

Can't really see it as wasteful when you're wasting an infinite resource in the first place.
But getting things from across the room via magic is definitely lazy.

I think people tend to use it as a quick fix by theory and idea, but tend to forget it should have just been that and continuously use it. Who knows. Maybe they just didn't feel like going to buy another item.

I do rather just own a bunch of fanciful teacups and frivulous things though. Perhaps that is the consumer side of me speaking though.

I think you would do well. I enjoy seeing other people quite interested in taking on a responsibility while handling school. Not many are up to the challenge.
