What's the point of having freedoms if you're not allowed to exercise them?

I'll make a study of dark magic in my own time outside of school I suppose but there must be something I can do in the interim.

There wouldn't be much of a point, would there? And I do think you should be exercising your freedoms as much as you can for the time being. I'm just advising against making them too well known.

I was under the impression that apparition in Hogwarts was impossible.

Well, yes, but I don't know if you did any practicing before I turned up at your house on your birthday or if you're planning on taking any official lessons from the Ministry.

Apparition would certainly make my life easier in the long run. And you're right; I'm much rather have a go myself than attend any Ministry lessons. Perhaps at the next Hogsmeade trip I can give it a try.
