Alright listen up, sproglets. And I mean that in the most loving way possible, so calm yourselves. ML starts Monday and before we dive headfirst into the fucking ins and outs of squeaking like a Mermaid and making orgasmic Troll noises, I need to see how you all can handle the English language.

_{[This isn't going as planned. Because now he's getting worked up more than he should, but he can't help it. He's angry that Bro is telling him no, he's upset at himself for being such a baby, and he's scared because he he doesn't want to fly.]}

But I don't care about that. It's a stupid class to be required and I don't wanna do it. I'm not going to. You can't make me.

[That hurts... that hurts a lot, and Bro has to really fight not to let his feelings get hurt more. He knows that Dirk is just upset and lashing out, he knows that he... probably doesn't really mean that It hurts, but he has to keep himself calm for Dirk and not get upset.]

I don't want to make you... I want you to want it. [He shifts so that he can get down on his knees so that he's level with Dirk.] I know it's hard, man... I... I know what it reminds you of. But... I promise, it's not dangerous.

_{[It's so hard to not start crying in that moment. Extremely hard. Everything hurts and Bro is too spot on and knows exactly why Dirk is so terrified of the idea. It makes it easier because he doesn't have to say it, but it makes it harder because he can't pretend it's not another reason. It makes it too real.]}

But what if you're wrong? What if I get on and something happens? What if I... Dave broke his arm before!

[Despite the fact that this conversation hurts and that he's thinking about things he doesn't want to, Bro reaches up and tugs off his shades to look Dirk in the face. Even though he's hurting, he's trying to look comforting and determined.]

Have I ever lied to you? Have I ever said 'trust me' and been wrong? Have I ever said that I'd protect you and then didn't? Because nothing's gonna happen. I won't let anything like that happen to you, I promise. I fucking swear on my life.

_{[Bro might've taken his shades off, but Dirk's keeping his on. He's too much of a baby and doesn't want to own up emotions. Bro doesn't need to know that Dirk's eyes are swelled with tears. His cracking voice is probably a dead giveaway anyway.]}

I don't know. _{[He really doesn't. He doesn't know how to articulate what he's feeling. Or what's he's thinking. How he's remembering how someone else always promised to be there but ended up dying. And it's terrifying and it hurts. He feels so much right now but it's all conflicting and none of it makes sense.]}

[Bro really doesn't expect him to take off his shades. The only reason he's done it is so that Dirk can see how serious he's behind. That this isn't a joke to him, and that he means everything he says. But clearly words aren't enough anymore. He holds out his arms for Dirk to come over for a hug.]

_{[That, at least is something he can do. He doesn't even hesitate. As soon as Bro's arms are held out, Dirk is throwing himself at him and digging his face into Bro's shoulder.]}

[Once Dirk's there, he wraps his arms around him without hesitation. They go completely around him and it's like Bro is protecting him from the world. He holds him close, fingers curling into his shirt. When he speaks, his voice is quiet.]

It's gonna be okay. I promise. I'm here, I'm not going anywhere, and I'll protect you from anything. You can trust me. I'm never going to let anything happen to you. Okay?

_{[Dirk is holding onto him as tight as he can. Part of it is in effort to distract himself from the fact he can't make his crying stop. The other is based on the fundamental basis of needing a hug. He doesn't get enough of them, even less now that they're all using school sleeping arrangements. No more bunkbeds and close quarters.]}

Okay. _{[That's all he can manage to get out. But he at least nods.]}

[Bro's hand moves up to thread through his hair and lightly scratch at it. He's trying to be strong for Dirk, to not cry too even though he really wants to. This conversation has been hard, and he just. Needs to let out all of his built up emotions. But he can't, because Dirk needs him to be strong. When he speaks, he manages to sound pretty calm even though it's still quiet.]

Will you let me teach you how to fly?

_{[Eventually, he manages to calm down enough that he's capable of responding. But he doesn't speak right away. That's a really loaded question, at least it is for Dirk. Trusting Bro doesn't change the fact that it's really scary.]}

I don't know. I'll think about it.

[He has to force himself not to let out the sigh he feels coming. He realizes he has to accept that that's all he's gonna get and that he can't force Dirk into it or make him feel pressured. All he can do is just... wait.]

Alright.

[He doesn't let go though. He won't until Dirk's ready.]

_{[He's not in a position to know that Bro's irritated with that response. He falls quiet and just clings to him. It's another minute or so when he finally pulls back.]}

[He gives him a small smile once he's pulled away, even though it's hard. He hurts and he's scared. He wants Dirk to learn how to fly, and he's just... worried that it won't work out. That he'll say no.]

Any time. [He reaches over and ruffles Dirk's hair.] You wanna sleep in my room tonight, or what?

_{[The faintest of smiles briefly forms when Bro ruffles his hair. It vanishes when he lifts his arm to wipe at his face with his sleeve.]}

Alright. I think we should probably head back, then. It's getting a little late.

[This time, he doesn't hesitate. He leans down and picks Dirk up and places him on his shoulders. He makes a show of letting out a heave to seem like Dirk's the heaviest thing ever.]

_{[Oh no, Bro why did you do that? You're not supposed to make kids laugh right after they've finished crying. But this is what you've done. FOR SHAME.

But honestly, Dirk doesn't mind at all. He loves shoulder rides. He's just going to hold onto Bro's hat and be glad that his uncle decided this instead of carrying him like a baby.]}

Is it almost curfew?

[He's glad to have made Dirk laugh. That alone makes him feel better by a lot. He makes sure Dirk's balanced and won't fall, before he starts heading in the direction of the castle.]

Eh, few more minutes, I think. But it wouldn't really matter since you're with me.

It's really weird. It's so dumb how early we have to be in our dorms. I don't really like that aspect.

Heh, yeah. It's pretty dumb. See that's the good thing about being a teacher. You don't have aaany rules. You should consider it for when you graduate. I bet you're smart enough that by the time you graduate, you'd be able to take over for me. Early retirement for me, man.

[He can't help but let out a laugh at that, because gosh Dirk. Way to miss the point of it, which was supposed to be a compliment on your intelligence.]

Unfortunately that isn't the case. Otherwise I wouldn't even be enrolled in your class. I don't understand why you would even say that when I lack all the qualifications, even in a hypothetical sense.
