Returning to school is an interesting prospect, but I believe I have soured a bit on the concept this evening. If only the ignorant weren't so rampantly accepted - entrance exams for Hogwarts should be required, really, the way they do for Universities. Then, only the people who truly desired and could benefit from an education would be allowed. Perhaps something else could be arranged for those who did poorly on their exams. Everyone should be given the opportunity to better themselves, but I would rather they not get in the way of MY learning. There are no sacred places any more, I'm rapidly learning.

That being said, my summer went excellently, as my uncle Hans is, as ever, an enlightening and enlightened man. It's a shame he lives so far away, as I would visit him every holiday if I could. It would be nice to have someone to talk to about his work, but some things are just not meant to be, I guess.

Rejoice, students of Hogwarts, for I have found my journal!

It was trapped underneath Trollki's tank. I have no idea how it got there. But that explains why it was missing all summer! And I know you have all missed me, but please try to contain your enthusiasm. Don't all rush to greet me at once, I will be on the train, after all.

In other news, all current and prospective members of the Medical Science and Magic Society, please note that we will be holding our first meeting Thursday, September Sixth post evening meal in the dungeons. There will be cake, so make sure to save some room! I can't wait to see everyone there!

(No, Ognian, you're not allowed to show up just for the cake. That is for members only.)

Well, now, boys and girls, it would seem you have yourselves a new Professor here.

I am Doctor Facilier, and I will be teaching you what you might call... Muggle magic. Now, don't you scoff at that. Voodoo, Tarot card reading... They're just as much magic as any wand-waving you all do, and even more so than peering into a crystal ball or tea leaves.

Voodoo is my specialty, now, but I also practice Hoodoo and read Tarot cards, and I'm not too shabby with Shamanism, if I do say so myself. And we'll be covering all that and more in class.

'Course, my class isn't for everyone. It takes a great deal of skill to master these arts, not to mention an open mind.

Now, who's up for the challenge?

I've been looking into patronuses lately while studying for OWLs.

...Or is that patroni? Maybe patronae?

Well, whatever, in any case I've found that they generally take the form of something most significant to you. That's usually an animal of some type, because you know, animals and magical symbolism are fairly close to each other.

What sort of animal do you think yours would take the shape of? I've been thinking it over and I'm a little convinced that mine would be a magpie. If I wanted to try and make one, that is.

I think I should try it.

In the interest of correcting some misinformation, leap day actually happens because it actually takes slightly longer than 365 days for the earth to fully orbit the sun. Without the addition of an extra day every four years, the calendar would eventually slip out of sync with the seasons. In fact, the current Gregorian calendar was designed to keep the date of Easter correct with respect to the vernal equinox.

Interestingly enough, although leap years usually occur in any year that is divisible by four, years that are evenly divisible by 100 but not by 400 are not leap years. Just to keep everything even.

Now, isn't that much more interesting?

Whoever decided it would be a good idea to tie strings around every book in the library, I didn't find it very amusing. It made it incredibly difficult to manoeuvre with all those strings in the way!

And besides, that must have taken ages to accomplish. Wouldn't that time have been better spent reading the books than tying strings around them?

I know it can be difficult to eat properly this month, what with Valentine's Day around the corner. This is especially true if you're a stunning eligible bachelor like me, and your raw animal magnetism makes girls heap pounds of chocolate at your feet.

So just as a little reminder about healthy habits, I've made an illustration highlighting some of the most nutritious food groups, complete with some of the best examples of each! Consider it a little Prefect pro-tip~.

I've already seen at least five people mention Valentine's Day.

Did you know there's no actual proof linking Saint Valentine of Rome or of Terni to romantic notions? It's all legend. Probably not even true.

Why do people care about this holiday?

I'm really sorry about what happened. I can't help but feel partly responsible, since Spike is my pet, and I should have been keeping a closer eye on him.

I did manage to find the real Spike, now that all the duplicates are gone. He was on my bed. I wonder if he was there the whole time?

.... I hope everyone was able to find any of their belongings that may have gone missing. If something was damaged, I'd be willing to try and fix it.

[So, Cassie was bored during class, and scribbled this list in her journal to pass the time. Feel free to add to it, comment on it, etc.]

Things to do with Crested Gecko's Tiny Dragons

1. link them and wear them as a necklace.
2. use them to accent a hat.
3. use them as bookmarks, if you don't close the book
4. shoe warmers
5. wear them in your hair like a flower
6. tell them all your secrets

One.

I think everyone is taking this lizard fiasco too seriously. They aren't harmful in any way, and they have their uses.

I find the need to apologize to my fellow Ravenclaws for the loss in points. As a prefect, it was irresponsible, and I assure my housemates that it won't occur again.

And I hope that no one allows their pet to come in contact with Yong Soo in the future, the number of lizards in the Ravenclaw Commonroom is obscene.

It's not that I'm adverse to lizards, it's just...not a pleasant surprise to see one swimming around in my inkwell. Not to mention in my sheets and bag and shoes and practically everywhere else.

Twilight, I doubt any of these are your actual lizard, but do I need to keep them heated anyway? I don't have a tank or anything, but I'm sure I could find a charm to keep them warm! Just to be on the safe side...

Also, does anyone mind letting me borrow their copy of A Guide to Advanced Transfiguration? At least until I can get the ink stains out of mine. I think the inkwell lizard went a bit wild on several of the pages.

Twilight Sparkle, if you are still searching for Spike, I have found him. As a matter of fact, I have found several dozen of him, crawing all over my things. He's always been friendly toward me, but this is rather ridiculous, so if you could help me collect, er, them and figure out what happened, I would be greatful.

And to everybody else: if you run into any stray female unmentionables... they belong to me. Thank you.

WHY ARE THERE TINY LIZARDS IN THE DORM?

Seriously, I get that this is a magic school, so I should probably expect some weird stuff, but why are there all these tiny lizards?

And why are they purple? I don't think that's normal...

Oh wait...

I know most people here only pay attention to the new year that falls on January 1st, but what's so special about that? The answer, of course, is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, unless you're a major fan of drinking too much champagne and throwing up half-way through a half-remembered rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Booooriiiiiing!

No, Lunar New Year is the best New Year, no contest! There are countless reasons why, but one of the biggest is that each year gets an awesome animal symbol! Can't say that about stupid solar New Year!

In a few hours, the Year of the Rabbit will end. And I thought it would be fitting for the new year to come just a liiiittle early and chase the dusty old bunny year out! And not only that, but do it in style and power!

... basically what I'm trying to say is that's what's up with the hundreds and hundreds of lizards running around. I wanted to use the real deal, but would anybody sell a black market dragon to somebody underage? Noooooo. I tried. Besides, lizards are pretty much tiny dragons, right?

Happy soon-to-be Year of the Dragon, everyone, and be sure to treat the hundreds of Spikes running around with the respect... he?... they?... deserve as a symbol of luck and prosperity!

Has anyone seen a crested gecko? He's about six inches long, and he's purple. Well, they're normally orange but he got into a little accident when he was a baby. He answers to Spike. That is, if he answers at all. I mean, he doesn't really come when you call him, but he usually perks his head up when I call his name.

Reptiles are cold-blooded, so I'm worried about him wandering around the castle by himself when it's so cold out. He might have gotten lost somewhere and not had enough body heat to get back. If it gets too cold they'll just shut down and hibernate, but his tank is always toasty so his body wouldn't be prepared for that. If I don't find him soon he could starve to death!

If I'm late pointing this out, it's only because I was so shocked.

Some of you, and I'm sure you know who, should be ashamed of yourselves.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Now, can anyone recommend some good books to me?

It is quite nice to be back! Christmas was good, of course; my parents sent nice things. But spending the holiday -- Ha, spending most days! -- with Lawrence is rather boring.

You are all quite more interesting! And now there is a whole new year to have fun in!

Does anyone have exciting plans for this year?
