Greetings!

I have been pondering the topic of music. I know, I know - what else is new? But I was wondering if I could get some opinions.

How do people feel about the concept of music as a manipulative device?

I am aware that to some, it may not be effective. But others are quite sensitive to the effect of various tones, producing various results as well based on each individual's personal experience. But think about it - as practitioners of magic, we are constantly manipulating others, manipulating fate, and the physical appearance of those around us.

In terms of human emotion, is making music the closest a muggle can get to using magic?

I've taken conducting classes back home, at summer programs, and I have to say that holding the baton in my hand, taking that command over a large group of people to create exactly what I wanted, was not so different from holding a wand and casting a spell. There is a certain invigorating power that it inspires, having that control to realize exactly what is in your mind at the moment.

Is it dangerous? Can music, too, be used negatively? I wouldn't want to, mind! But it was a thought - obviously it doesn't have as direct an effect as a dark spell might, but if one were to manipulate another person, through music, for selfish reasons - is that dangerous? Think of the Minnesänger troubadours, think of the serenades used to woo women from high towers, think of the patriotic music used to stir loyalty in troops in times of war. In Ancient Greece, it was believed that a king was stirred to battle simply by hearing a tune played on a flute in the Phrygian mode.

Can music, or any sound, really, be used to enhance our own magic? Maybe even to help us defend ourselves? I would also appreciate opinions from those of you who normally aren't as interested in music. Even if just to ensure that I am not thinking too idealistically through the eyes of a musician myself. Objective reassurance would be nice, if you can give it sincerely.

Yours,
Roderich

It's been a while since that shady business with those doppelganger-things, and a lot has happened. I think part of me worried that maybe I'd jinx it and everything would come tumbling down like a house of cards if I actually sat down and thought about it, but perhaps it's been long enough now.

Some of you might have noticed already, but for those who don't know... I haven't needed my cane since the last day the shadows were around. My limp hasn't been bothering me at all.

I'll not go into details since the particulars might get us a stern talking-to at the very least, but suffice to say, something that happened that day really unplugged all the sinking feelings that had been weighing me down for too damn long. (If the cryptic italicization makes zero sense to you, sorry - in joke.) Though maybe try not to go to such extremes next time, Sherlock. You're already brilliant without having to be so dramatic.

Anyway, it feels like it's been ages since I last went to Hogsmeade. I think I'll go this time since I can get around so much better now. Who else is going?

Morality. Must the ends of something justify the means? Is it morally acceptable to kill one to save many? Is killing wrong regardless of the outcome?

The line between right and wrong can be muddied rather easily.

All this talk about book privileges is boring, let's talk about something interesting.

Things are much better. Have been much better. I doubt there were a great many concerned but for the few annoying individuals who would not leave well enough alone, I am quite alright. The less said the better, honestly.

I'm not certain what Snow is thinking. Dark Magic like this is not something that could so easily infiltrate Hogwarts. He knows as much. I am beginning to suspect rather than being stupid, he is intentionally trying to hide something.

Far too early to go too far with such speculations. But I will certainly keep good records of these events for future analysis. Jumping to conclusions is the worst we could do in the interim. This makes two attacks in less than a year. There will be more. There can be certainty in that fact alone.

I must apologize for the delay in addressing the Halloween incident. You can rest easy knowing that I've been hard at work on the matter ever since it happened, contacting the Ministry and coming to the best course of action.

The Ministry and I believe that a powerful, dark magical object was brought into the school as a prank intended to make the ministry look like a fool for disregarding the incident at camp. The situation got out of hand, as you are all well aware of. As such, the Ministry has decided that in the next couple of weeks, security in the castle is going to be tightened considerably. Random trunk checks will be conducted and anyone leaving or entering the castle will be searched thoroughly, as will mail.

Finally, I will be questioning everyone personally. I will find out who did this, and I will make sure they are punished accordingly, expulsion being the minimum.

If you have any questions or information regarding the incident, you can ask here. If you have information, see me in my office immediately.

Ravenclaw and Slytherin. It's been some time since I've assigned you work. I'd hate for your minds to wander while your professor is busy with near endless preperations, so I've taken the time to set you some busywork and warn you about your future curriculum.

First years, we will be studying the correct ways to treat and bandage wounds in an emergency. There will be practicals and you will be practising. I trust that the idea of bandaging a classmate won't throw you all into veritable fits of excitement.

In preperation for this I ask, Why put pressure on a bleeding wound?

Second years I'm sure you'll be thrilled to know we will be studying Cornish Pixies. If I'm feeling particularly magnanimous I may set one lose and have you attempt to catch it. I warn you, they do bite.

Third years can you tell me what the Lumos Duo spell is most commonly used in defence of? The answer will provide you with the subject of our next studies.

Fourth years as you've been informed, we are studying curses with a special attention to the unforgivable curses. I want you to name one and write me at least ten lines on why it has been deemed unforgivable.

Fifth years we will be studying the effective use of jinxes in battle and defence. I want you to name a jinx and write twenty lines on theoretical a situation it would be beneficial to use in.

Sixth years it is my great pleasure to announce that we are slowly ready to move on from the theory of nonverbal spells and we will begin to practise them. We will be starting with very basic spells, but remember that they take an immense amount of concentration. I advise that you rest up before classes.
You may rest, of course, once you write ten lines on the importance of nonverbal spells and what kind of things are important to perfect them. For example: To become proficient at nonverbal spells, one must become particularly good at focusing.

Seventh years will be going over theory with me and on Friday we will be having an in-class discussion about the psychological impacts of Dark Magic and curses. It will be a draining class, perhaps emotionally so. As with the sixth years, I advise you rest up and fortunately, you are free from the wrath of assignments.

Thank you and remember to ASK if you are in a state of complete and utter confusion. I would rather suffer through a stupid question than receive unsatisfactory work. It makes us both look bad when I grade you and I do so hate using red ink.

I'm not at all surprised that Gryffindor caught the snitch. I'm excited for Ravenclaw to play, it should be fairly exciting, but probably not as much as a tie.

I wrote home a while ago to say that I'll be staying for the winter break. I got a letter back and my Father didn't mind too much since we celebrate Christmas in Januray because he's Orthodox. I'd be here anyways and we'd just spend December 25th at the cinema. I'll have to write to my Uncle Logan and let him know. I hope he doesn't ask if I'm staying because of some boy like my Father did. I should just tell them it's some dashing seventh year if they keep asking. Does anyone else have a nosy family that just assumes it's because you like someone that you don't want to go home?

Something I’ve wondered about for quite some time now: do students always align their preference in Quiddich teams based on their house? Would it be a breach of fealty to root for another house even if they are superior in skill? We wear our house colors to matches so in order to root for another house, would we have to go and find robes of their colors so as to show preference?

I really don’t understand the houses anyway. Seems like an intentionally antagonistic means of categorizing people by their basic personality types. Smart students can be in any house just as students with poor marks can be in Ravenclaw and not everyone outside of Gryffindor is a coward. We’re sort of dealt with imposed prejudice by being grouped with people “like us” who are in fact no more our kin than any other student in any other house.

Did you know that statistically, women do not work well together? There is constant completion in the ranks because they share enough similarities just in their gender that the need to stand apart becomes the driving force rather than working together. I would imagine this would be the same for the houses. Outside of Quiddich, the competition exist inside the houses between each student in an attempt to not just be a Ravenclaw, let’s say, but the Ravenclaw.

There are no studies where Hogwarts was not segregated to compare to but it seems a flawed system. If we were to remove Quiddich alone, and forgo that major source for commonality and community, would the houses tear themselves apart rather than engage in different cross-house hostility?

I wasn’t actually paying attention but I hear Slytherin did well. As Ravenclaw and Slytherin are currently locked in a house points war, I suppose I should be disappointed? I’m not.

In the interest of an unbiased study into muggle behaviors and cultural discrepancies, I require a ^muggleborn female student to associate with me or at the very least permit me to engage in observational behavior including but not limited to tailing, watching from the shadows, and keeping close records on all activities, correspondence, and so on. Do not waste my time if you are already well aware that you are annoying and generally distasteful.

Please respond to this message with your interest. I will select the best candidate once all volunteers have come forward.

[Handwriting is pretty shaky and ugly this time around.]

Do you think cats know they're cats? I wonder if animals are aware of what they are. Like us being aware we're humans. I'm pretty sure Pillow thinks she's human. What with her hogging the bed and laying her head on my pillow.

I suppose now is as good a time as any to formally apologise for my behaviour under the influence of the unexplained events. We all know that it's an entirely blameless situation and that nothing can be done, so, any further mentions of the situation involving myself in particular may be reason enough for me to remove points. Let's not be counter productive about this, let's just move on from it.

This journal is also an opportunity to share some more positive news regarding Slytherin and Ravenclaw students taking my class. I have acquired a boggart and there will be a practical class in the next few weeks. As such, any concerns should be brought to me. However, if you skip without my consent I will make you regret it every day for the rest of your school life. Thank you.

Now, an assignment for all of you in my class, though the lengths will vary. I want you to consider the events of the previous days and then think about the risks and consequences of uncontrolled magic, even if it's not necessarily Dark Arts, it's still a situation one must understand and prepare for. I want you to take a long thought about why we have rules and regulations to adhere to and how they benefit us.
First to Third years I want to see at least three good paragraphs. Fourth to Fifth should write at least five. Sixth to Seventh I expect a convincing, well thought out essay with an argument for your opinion. The length is up to you.

I will finish with a friendly reminder that you may not use my situation as an example in your analysis unless you're particularly interested in failure.

[Private to Tulio]
15 points to Slytherin for impressive negotiation skills.

If anyone was placing bets on who would end up killing their goat, Mr Holmes is the winner.

I know you're all trying to figure out what happened the last few days, but tomorrow we'll be doing our first bezoar extraction. I don't care if your goat is still talking or you're dealing with extra body parts.

So, who else signed up for this teachers Quidditch match? I'm more familiar with Quodpot honestly.

Does anyone know about any transfiguration spells that can change your sex, and if yes, anyone have any information on how to reverse said spell?

Okay. So I don't know how I did it.

Wow.

And I know I'm being hated for it. But I'm going to fix it.

For the record it wasn't on purpose and I'm still tring to...

I mean yeah I had my wand, but I didn't have it in my hand. The screwdriver was.

I feel like really it's the teachers fault, because no one let me in on the memo about this happening.

I'm not sure if anyone else has been having this issue with their goats, but Zazzerpan has been following me around and bleating very insistently for quite a while now and I'm getting to be very worried about him. I know that I've been feeding him sufficiently and I've checked him for injuries or possible disease a number of times, so I'm really not sure of what could be wrong.

Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Why do we wash towels when we dry off with them after getting clean?
